Consultant Ultrasound Specialist (Non-Medical). Recognised internationally particularly for his work in gynaecology, reproductive medicine and pregnancy screening. Regarded by several of the world’s leading ultrasound manufacturers as a “luminary figure” in the technical development and clinical applications of modern ultrasound scanning technologies. Qualified in medical ultrasound in 1978 whilst working at Kings College Hospital, London, within the world renowned ultrasound unit headed by Professor Stuart Campbell. Head of the obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound unit at The Royal Free Hospital, London from 1979-1982. Pursued his particular interest in Reproductive Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Assessment / First Trimester Screening at The Cromwell Hospital and Wellington Hospital, London, as a member of the IVF and Assisted Reproduction Units headed by Professor Ian Craft. Associate Research Ultrasonographer within endometriosis + pelvic pain, outpatient hysteroscopy and gynaecological oncology clinics at North Middlesex Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital attached to the clinical gynaecology teams headed by Mr Paul Hardiman and Mr Lindsay McMillan respectively during 1990 – 2004. Set up Clinical Diagnostic Services (CDS) with Mr Yehudi Gordon consultant obstetrician / gynaecologist, in 1990. CDS and its scanning team are extremely well known and highly regarded within the world of clinical ultrasound both throughout the UK as well as abroad. Bill Smith and CDS are well recognised for their involvement and pioneering work in developing many of the key technical advances that have had a major clinical impact as part of ultrasound imaging. This particularly relates to transvaginal scanning, as well as colour flow mapping, 3D / 4D volumetric ultrasound, contrast studies (saline infusion sonohysterography + hysterosonosalpingiography), “Fly Thru” (“ultrasound hysteroscopy”) technology and ultrasound assisted (interventional) surgical procedures to include oocyte retrieval and general gynaecological techniques. As an international speaker he has been invited to talk at many of the leading ultrasound / clinical meetings worldwide over the years. Postgraduate lecturer at Liverpool University. CDS (Bill Smith) is recognised for its educational and training programmes. Author / co-author of numerous clinical / ultrasound papers for leading journals and educational websites over the years. In 2009 received the inaugural Peter Twining Memorial Medal awarded by BMUS in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the technical and clinical development of ultrasound.
