On Wednesday 19th July, Chana welcomed over 600 women to its Annual Ladies Brunch. The new venue, transformed by the creative skills of Lissie Morris and her loyal committee, was filled to the rafters with women of all ages and from all parts of the community all eager to hear about Chana's advances over a delicious brunch.
Despite the large number attending, it felt like we were being taken on a very intimate journey, sharing experiences which often take place behind closed doors, hidden from public view.
Carolyn Cohen, Principal Social Worker, welcomed everyone and introduced the speakers, who portrayed two very different fertility experiences.
We were privileged to hear about the work of Dr Benny Abromov, Consultant Gynaecologist and MD of Gennet City Fertility, who has extensive experience in the management of complex fertility problems and is one of 26 members of the Chana Medical Advisory Panel. He spoke movingly about his personal feelings when witnessing the pain and anguish his patients go through. It was fascinating to hear, from a consultant’s perspective, how Dr Abromov feels when implanting embryos for a couple who may have waited up to 7 long years for such a treatment; his portrayal of the weight of the responsibility he carries was heartfelt. He spoke of his admiration for the work Chana does, having seen first-hand the great lengths the Medical Panel goes to ensure couples are having the best possible course of treatment to reach the best possible outcome.
The room fell silent when hearing from our next speakers, Matt and Rivka Bick. They spoke bravely and emotionally about their quest to add to their family, and it is testament to their powerful story that one could not hear a pin drop in a room full of over 600 Jewish women! Their story touched everyone in the room; the pain of miscarriage, and secondary infertility is very real and yet often not discussed.
Chana is delighted that Matt and Rivka have started training to become Chana Buddies and will soon be ready to provide help and support to couples going through any similar experience.
The feedback we have received has been extremely positive, and has already been reflected in an increase in calls to the Helpline.
“Today was inspiring and very emotional. It was amazing to see over 600 women supporting such an important but unspoken about cause."
“Very emotional and beautifully told. Too many people don't talk about miscarriage. Enjoy your beautiful family”
“Thank you for such a beautiful emotional lunch, Chana was not around when I needed such a worthwhile charity, but I have mentioned the work you do to friends of mine who will be in contact”
“It was inspiring and so glad there is a charity like Chana to help so many people”
