FERTILITY TREATMENT OPTIONS
*ARE YOU TRYING TO FIND YOUR WAY THROUGH THE MAZE OF DIFFERENT TREATMENT OPTIONS?
*DO YOU WISH YOU WERE BETTER EQUIPPED TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS?

In September CHANA offered both men and women dealing with fertility issues an opportunity to hear from medical specialists, including doctors and nurses, about recent research to help them evaluate vital information. By making sense of published data, and finding out unbiased information, people gained tools to ask the relevant questions to their own doctor and explore the approaches which may be most appropriate for them. Treatments included:
  • IVIG
  • INFECTION SCREENING
  • MALE INFERTILITY
  • ICSI
  • BLASTOCYST TRANSFER
  • ACUPUNCTURE
  • HYPNOTHERAPY

    "RECENT RESEARCH INTO MISCARRIGE"
Presented by Professor Lesley Regan MD FROG
Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Imperial College, St. Mary’s Campus
    (28th June 2006, Edgware)

Members and friends of CHANA WELL WOMAN were privileged to hear an address by PROFESSOR LESLEY REGAN, MD FRCOG, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, who for the past decade has worked to establish the biggest miscarriage clinic in the world. Professor Regan began her address by explaining that miscarriage is the most common complication in pregnancy. Up to 50% of women will experience a ‘one off’ or ‘bad luck’ miscarriage and the vast majority will then go on to experience a healthy pregnancy. Recurrent miscarriages are much less common and statistically only 1% of women will suffer 3 or more consecutive miscarriages. Some of the determining factors for recurrent miscarriage are age (risk does increase after 35 years of age) and reproductive history. Unlike ‘one off’ miscarriages, recurrent miscarriages are less likely to be caused by a chromosomal problem with the foetus; much more relevant are factors such as autoimmune disorder, anatomical problems, cervical incompetence, endocrine factors and the general health and well-being of the woman. It is also important to understand that women with a history of recurrent miscarriage are more likely to experience later pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation, preterm labour and stillbirth in ongoing successful pregnancies. Although many of these women will succeed in having a successful live take-home baby, that baby may need to spend time in the Special Care Baby Unit before being discharged from hospital. This emphasises the importance of specialist ongoing antenatal care for all women with a history of recurrent miscarriage. An interesting question and answer session followed, with some insight given on how emotionally stressful miscarriage can be.

For a C.D. of the event please contact the office. The CHANA library has copies of Lesley Regan’s book, ‘Miscarriage: What Every Woman Needs to Know’ for you to purchase or borrow.

    "IS STRESS WEARING YOU DOWN?"
In November 2006, “DEALING WITH STRESS” was presented by a homeopath, massage therapist, social worker, hypnotherapist and cranial therapist. Each professional looked at a different angle of how stress can affect individuals both physically and emotionally, and explained how their area of speciality focussed on specific issues. It was very interesting to hear the diverse views, as well as shared thoughts on preventing and coping with stress.
